java is used alot in certain parts of web design, most modern programming though for almost anything is done in C or java. Java can also be used for the gaming industry as shown by the popular online game Runescape. Any kind of programmign nowadays is a wide wide field with lots of openings. Whatver you do will end up in one of the 3 catagories though. Software Development, Web Design, or game design
Java programmers are considered code monkeys and are usually over-worked and under-paid. Usually around $30K/year USD.
On the other hand, Database administrators using SQL make about $100K/year and the programming is much, much easier. Just have to get all the proper certifications.
